It Was an Accidental “Take-Over”

Recently, I was part of a committee planning a party. Excitement was high, energy was contagious, and enthusiasm was running full tilt for all of us.

Then, the big day arrived.

As a natural leader, I found myself stepping into the role of conductor—guiding activities, making decisions, keeping the momentum going. It felt natural and effortless.

But later, after the party was over, it hit me:

"Did I just accidentally take over?"

Looking back, I realized that my "auto-pilot" leadership mode may have unintentionally pushed others into the background: people who were EQUALLY as excited as I was but maybe less bold.

When I found an opportunity to reflect, I realized:

  • There was room to share the spotlight

  • There was space for more voices

  • I just got caught up in the moment and didn’t notice soon enough

And that realization stung.

The Reality of Leadership: We Won’t Always Get It Right

Leadership is not about being perfect.

As leaders, we are bound to mess up. We will miss cues. We will unintentionally overstep.

But as Self-Aware Leaders, we don’t just brush it off.

We notice.

We reflect.

We adjust.

Because leadership isn’t just about stepping up, it’s also about knowing when to step back.

The next time you find yourself naturally taking charge, ask yourself:

➡️ Am I creating space for others to contribute?

➡️ Am I leading because it’s needed—or because it’s my default?

➡️ Who else in the room has something valuable to offer, and how can I invite them in?

Great leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice—it’s about amplifying others and creating the space to allow them to shine.

So, let’s lead with awareness, balance, and humility.

Because there’s room for all of us.
